Scott Laboratories Scott Labratores
Company – News & Events

April 2008
Mr. Antonio Velo, proprietor of Velo S.p.A., made his first visit to the United States in almost a decade. Mr. Velo first came to California in 1980 to introduce his pressure leaf filters which soon became the industry standard. During the years to follow, Scott Laboratories has sold well over 1,200 Velo filters of various configurations together with tanks, rotary fermenters and a variety of other products. Much of his recent visit was spent discussing newer technologies (such as a new generation of crossflow filters) and visiting customers (new and old).

October 2007

The 2007 harvest saw the introduction of Armbruster's new "Roto-Vib" destemmer. This patented technology incorporating oscillating components allows the destmmer to begin selectively "picking" the good berries while allowing under-ripe or rotted fruit to pass through and out. Though trialed previously in Europe, the North Americans are the first to truly embrace the concept with 11 new installations in 2007. The inventor, Mr. Hermann Armbruster, spent two weeks with Scott Laboratories in September checking out the installations and making sure that all went well. Most often these installations were automated. Red grape varieties processed included (but were not limited to) Pinot Noir, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

May 2007 - Dr. Paul Bowyer in California to speak on Tannin Research

Dr. Paul Bowyer, technical manager for Laffort Oenologie in Australia, will be speaking on the latest research on tannins at various locations in California during the last two weeks of May.

Incorporated topics include recent scientific and commercial trials with new vinification tannins, as well as tannin interactions with elements in wine, such as color and protein. Dr. Bowyer will also discuss the use of tannins as antioxidants and their ability to remove certain sulfidic characters in wine.

Dr. Bowyer joined Laffort Oenologie in 2006 as the Australasian Technical Manager. He provides technical advice pertaining to wine chemistry and general wine production. Prior to his work with Laffort, Dr. Bowyer taught at the University of Adelaide, where he remains an Adjunct Lecturer with active research programs investigating yeast rehydration protocols, vinification tannins, astringency perception mechanisms and novel fining agents. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of New South Wales.

July 2006
- Kent Sakato Retires, Maggie McBride takes over as our new Lab Manager
Scott Laboratories’ lab manager of 29 years, Kent Sakato, retired on July 14th. Kent led the lab through three facilities and witnessed the growth of the company from 12 employees to 52. The employees of Scott Laboratories and the many winemakers and enologists who have worked with Kent over these past 29 years will miss the kind nature and helpful advice that got us through many a mess.
Maggie McBride joined Scott Laboratories on June 14, 2006 in time to work with Kent and become the new Lab Manager. While continuing to service the industry with traditional offerings, Maggie and the laboratory will work to deliver more analysis for specific winemaking scenarios such as stuck fermentations, nightmare filtrations and specialized fining needs.

April 2006

Scott Laboratories Inc and Anchor Yeast (a member of the Lallemand Group) announced agreement that Scott would begin distribution for Anchor in the United States. Anchor has long been one of the largest yeast producers in the southern hemisphere. In 1975 Anchor began commercialization of wine yeast from its CapeTown facility to support the local wine industry. Cooperative work with research facilities in Stellenbosch  eventually led (in 1993) to the  introduction of  the world’s first non-GMO hybrid strain (VIN 13). This is a strain that has since become famous world-wide.  Anchor became part of the Lallemand Group in November 2005.  For the 2006 harvest Scott will offer 4 sections from the Anchor portfolio. They will include VIN 7, VIN 13, NT 50 and NT 116.
